You’re eating “clean”—whole foods, minimal junk—and yet, your body composition isn’t changing. Sound familiar? Many people hit this wall, feeling stuck despite their healthy habits. The truth is, eating clean isn’t the same as eating smart. To achieve fat loss or muscle gain, you need intentionality, not just “healthy” choices. Let’s break down three common mistakes and how to fix them for real results.

3 Mistakes Holding You Back - Even with a clean diet, these pitfalls can stall your progress:

1. Not Enough Protein

Protein is the building block of muscle, but most people—especially women—aren’t getting enough. If you’re only eating 30–50g of protein daily, you’re likely shortchanging your body. To build or maintain lean muscle:

  • Aim High: Target 0.7–1g of protein per pound of body weight daily (e.g., 100–140g for a 140-pound person).
  • Why It Matters: Protein supports muscle repair, growth, and even fat loss by keeping you full and boosting metabolism.

2. Always Under-Eating

“Clean” doesn’t mean effective if you’re stuck in a chronic calorie deficit. Eating low-calorie whole foods might work for fat loss initially, but over time, your metabolism adapts, and your energy crashes. This leaves you tired, plateaued, and frustrated. Instead:

  • Fuel Your Goals: Ensure you’re eating enough to support your activity level and muscle-building needs.
  • Balance It Out: Include carbs and fats alongside protein to power your workouts and recovery.

3. No Pre/Post-Workout Strategy

Timing your nutrition can make a big difference. If you’re not fueling your workouts properly, you’re missing out on performance and recovery benefits. Small tweaks like these can have a big impact:

  • Before Lifting: Add a carb-rich snack (e.g., fruit or toast) for energy.
  • After Lifting: Pair protein with carbs (e.g., a protein shake with a banana) to jumpstart recovery.

From Clean to Strategic

Eating clean is a great start, but body transformation requires a plan. You need the right amount of protein, enough calories to fuel your goals, and a strategy to optimize your workouts. When these pieces align, you’ll see changes—and they’ll last.
